Seaweed 海藻 hǎizǎo
Seaweed has been eaten in China for thousands of years, for it is very rich in vitamins and minerals. It contains iodine, Vitamins A, B and E, and traces of magnesium, copper, silver, titanium, nickel, chromium, barium, sulphur, sodium and many other minerals. It is eaten as a vegetable, and in powdered form is used as a condiment in place of salt and to add flavour and goodness to bread, biscuits, cakes and so forth. Seaweed prevents goitre, relieves congestion, breaks up phlegm, reduces fever, relieves heart trouble, brings down high blood pressure, and cures tumours, cysts and dropsy.
Seaweed tea (海藻茶 hǎizǎo chá)
To one pint of boiling water add a quarter-ounce of seaweed or seaweed powder, and drink a wineglassful at each meal.
Seaweed compress (海藻膏药 hǎizǎo gāoyao, traditional 海藻膏藥)
Add two ounces of chopped seaweed to one pint of boiling water; dip a cloth into the fluid; squeeze it out; then apply to the painful joints.
