Burdock (牛蒡子 niúbàngzi, traditional 牛蒡子)
Burdock grows in profusion almost anywhere, especially in damp places. The seeds, leaves and the roots are all used in Chinese herbal therapy, while the stalks, stripped of their tough outer skin, are used as a vegetable in salads and other dishes. Burdock helps the bladder and the kidneys to function efficiently, cures influenza and tonsillitis, clears fevers, disperses wind, aids damaged tissues to heal rapidly, speeds up perspiration when needed, and is effective against many skin troubles, such as boils and abscesses.
Burdock tea (牛蒡子茶 niúbàngzi chá, traditional 牛蒡子茶)
Add a quarter-ounce of burdock seeds to one pint of boiling water. Drink one wineglass-full three times daily.
Burdock poultice (牛蒡子膏药 niúbàngzi gāoyào, traditional 牛蒡子膏藥)
For external applications the roots and the leaves are crushed, warmed up and placed in a thin cloth, then applied to the part affected. This is effective against all skin troubles.
