Hawthorn (山楂 shānzhā, traditional 山楂)

Although the flowers are edible and can be sprinkled on to fruit salads, yoghurt and custards, it is the roots and fruits that are used medicinally, for they are astringent and warming. They aid digestion, stop diarrhoea and dysentery, stimulate the circulation of the blood, and ease menstrual and abdominal cramps. Dosage (服 fù). Mix a quarter-ounce of the pulped fruits and roots with a little hot water. Taken twice daily.

Hawthorn compress (山楂膏药 shānzhā gāoyao, traditional 山楂膏藥)

Put a little hot water with the pulped roots and fruit, and mix it with a little flour so that it attains a thick consistency. Apply to the painful area and hold in place with a cloth or bandage. If you place a hot-water bottle on top of the bandage, this will increase the time for which the heat is retained.
