Onions (洋葱 yángcōng, traditional 洋蔥)

These are rich in Vitamin C and are excellent for the kidneys, but in their raw state they should be consumed only in small quantities. They are very good for those who suffer from flatulence, diabetes, hardening of the arteries, colds, influenza or asthma, they help to increase the appetite, and they encourage sleep.

Onion drink (泡洋葱片 pào yángcōng piān, traditional 泡洋蔥片)

A nasal discharge, a cold or asthma can be eradicated simply by dipping a slice of raw onion into a glass of hot water for a few seconds, then sipping the water slowly throughout the day. This drink will also stimulate the kidneys.

Onion gruel (洋葱粥 yángcōng zhōu, traditional 洋蔥粥)

Boil the onions in water, and, having removed the onions, use the water to make a gruel from brown rice, oats or other grains. This, consumed in the evening, will be found to induce sleep.

Onion poultice (洋葱膏药 yángcōng gāoyào, traditional 洋蔥膏藥)

This is prepared from onions chopped finely and placed between two cloths, and if applied to the neck will quickly disperse colds, headaches and even earache. When applied to the kidneys it will help stimulate them, and if applied to the calves of the legs will relieve heart trouble. If the onions are heated before being placed between the cloths, the poultice will greatly aid the circulation in the area to which it is applied, and so is good for gout, arthritis and stomach pains.
